10. White Night
Though quite a number of examples have surfaced over the year, queer cinema has no really seen its day Korea. 2012, however, signaled something of a change as Two Weddings and a Funeral became by far and away the country’s most successful gay film, however the best was also screened this year, even if it wasn’t seen by many. LeeSong Hee-il’s White Night is a lyrical and richly evocative work in which he employs heightened aesthetics to add weight and emotional impact to very pertinent social issues. A minor but no less poignant work, White Night was one of the year’s great surprises.
