2. Unbowed
Following hot on the heels of 2011's controversial Silenced, the incendiary Unbowed took aim at the rampant cronyism of Korea's legal system and on the back of its excellent performances and breathless pacing, it became one of the year's biggest surprise hits. Ahn Sung-kee is a marvel in the lead role, he spends almost the whole film handcuffed and sitting down yet he is magnetic, his performance is, just like his character, passionate and galvanised. But in the end the success of Unbowed is entirely of its own making; it is an invigorating and electrifying work and there hasn’t been a better legal thriller in years.
