7. Secret Sunshine (2007)
Secret Sunshine is a film that primarily explores the nature of faith and religion but in order to do that, it assumes many revenge tropes. Following a torrent of tragedy, which culminates in the death of her child, a woman finds herself on the verge of madness. Faced with her utter despair, she chooses to throw herself into religion, seeking refuge, salvation and anything to the make the pain go away. Before long however, the light of Christianity fails her. Feeling the sting of betrayal and the pent-up grief of the loss of her husband and son, she rails against God. Her quest for vengeance can find no other target.
An extraordinary film with a complex and devastating central performance from Jeon Do-yeon, Lee Chang-dong's Secret Sunshine takes a different spin on the traditional revenge film.
