Deer Flower from KANGMIN KIM on Vimeo.
Short Watch is a weekly feature dedicated to highlighting important short films from emerging and established filmmakers. Check back each Tuesday to watch a free and subtitled Korean short on MKC.
Screened and awarded around the world since it debuted at Sundance last year, Kim Kang-min's deranged and remarkably original short animation Deer Flower deserves all the attention it has and continues to receive.
A young boy is brought on a strange road trip to a deer farm in the early 1990s in a style that may best be described as cardboard stop motion, but that hardly captures the creativity on show here. Yet it's not just the visual craftsmanship that impresses as this short boasts a strong story brought to life with tension, awe, disgust and some well-placed humor as well as extraordinary sound design.
Kim is clearly a very gifted animator and one wonders where he might apply his talents next.
