News: Golden Bear for Korean Short HOSANNA
By Pierce Conran
For the second time in five years, a Korean film has walked away with the Berlin International Film Festival's Golden Bear for Short Film. Na Young-kil trumphed with Hosanna four years after brothers Park Chan-wook and Park Chan-kyong took home the same award for Night Fishing.
Hosanna, which debuted in Jeonju last May, was Na's graduation project from the Korean National University of Arts (K'Arts). Featuring a young man in a remote village who has the ability to bring people back from the dead, the film explores a darkness in society that perpetually regenerates. The man's miracles only bring him hatred from the people he saves, as they plunge back into their daily misery.
Korean shorts have been very successful at major fests over the the last few years, with Moon Byoung-gon's Safe taking the Palme d'Or for the Best Short in Cannes in 2013 and Yoon Ga-eun's Sprout earning the Crystal Bear for Best Short in Berlin last year.
Reviews and features on Korean film appear regularly on Modern Korean Cinema.
