Korean Box Office: Iron Man 3 Threepeats up Top (05/10-05/12, 2013)

Iron Man 3 stood strong for a third week but overall business took a dive as it fell under the two million mark, with only 1.8 million tickets sold. Good weather and a lack of strong new titles were likely to blame for the slow cinema traffic. That said the Korean market share shot up significantly to 33%, still not a great result compared to the past few months but nonetheless a slight increase over last year.

With 1,039,872 admissions, Iron Man 3 handily took the top spot once again but this time it lost 45% of its business. With almost 7.5 million tickets in the can, the film is still gunning for 10 million but as it slows down and with significant new competition this week it will probably fall short.

Opening at number two was the family dramedy Boomerang Family from Failan (2001) director Song Hae-seung, starring Park Hae-il, Kong Hyo-jin and Yoon Je-moon. The film accrued a decent 442,056 admissions during its debut but a lukewarm reception may prevent it from building significantly on this total. Should comfortably see its way over one million but further milestones seem unlikely.

Slipping a spot was last week's local debut Born to Sing, the comedy starring Kim In-gwon. It sliped 45% for 174,048 and now probably won't cross one million. Not a huge surprise nor a disaster given the film's size but likely still a disappointment for distributor Lotte Entertainment.

US animation The Croods scored fourth place with 53,031 with previews ahead of next week's full opening while The Rock vehicle Snitch debuted at number five with 23,902.

Next weekend will certainly be Star Trek's to lose as it opens wide. Local comedy-drama Happiness for Sale may also drum a smattering of business as a counter-programmed title.
