KCN: Deals Made at BIFF, Masquerade Still King (10/11-10/17, 2012)

BIFF Wraps up while a swath of deals while Masquerade continues to set records.

“As the number of the festival days has gone up, so has the maturity level of the audience.” said Lee Yong-kwan, BIFF Festival Director, about this year's edition. At the closing press conference held on 13th October, LEE said “The Busan Cinema Center has now firmly been established as the main venue of the festival. We need to explore further how to make best use of the Nampo area.” (KoBiz, October 16, 2012)

Korean films at National Museum in Bangladesh
The Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Dhaka is holding a festival featuring Korean films at the Main Auditorium, National Museum in Dhaka. The festival began on October 14 with an aim to promote Korean culture and language in Bangladesh. The films to be screened include Le Grand Chef, A Barefoot Dream,  Pacemaker, Papa and A Reason to Live. Masquerade Draws over 9 Million
Audience number for Masquerade totaled 277,515 on 13th October, making the total number for the film 9,089,565. This is 19 days earlier than the record set by The King and the Clown which went over the 9 million mark 50 days after release. (KoBiz, October 16, 2012)

BIFF Reconfirms Its Position at the Center of the Asian Film Industry
With the conclusion of the 17th BIFF, the side events such as the market, the Asian Cinema Fund as well as the forum were found to have been successes. This shows that the 17th Busan International Film Festival, held under the slogan of “Diversity of Asia”, has reconfirmed its position at the very center of the Asian film industry. Successful Opening of the 1st KOFIC Industry Forum
KOFIC Industry Forum was held during the 17th Busan Intenational Film Festival (BIFF) in hopes to find a way to revitalize international co-production from) Oct.8-10. First time being held, it was co-sponsored by Korea Film Council and Asian Film Market. (Korean Cinema Today, October 15, 2012)

70 Korean Film Deal Made
Asian film market that started on Oct. 8 was able to successfully close on Oct.11. This year’s market held at BEXCO has satisfied attendants with upgraded facilitation and operating system resulting in registration of 690 companies and 1,098 badges, an increase from last year which ended with 585 companies and 1080 badges. Moreover, total of 32 countries 181 companies and 96 booths were made including BIFCOM and around 2,635 buyers and film makers have paid visits on the opening day of the market. Korean Film on School Bullying Rings True in Japan
Last month, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development released statistics for 2009 in which Japan ranked 31 out of 31 developed countries in terms of the portion of GDP spent by the public sector on education. It was the third straight year that Japan placed last. (The Japan Times, October 14, 2012)

Shoot in New Zealand, Finalize in Korea
Gibson Group, a representative film production company in New Zealand announced that they signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for co-production with Cine 2000, Korean film production company that has made Whispering Corridors series and many other films. Gibson Group is New Zealand’s representative film production company that has produced and imported films and TV shows to 80 nations in the world. (KoBiz, October 12, 2012)

Honor and Fruits of KIM Dong-ho
Kim Dong-ho, the honorary director of the Busan International Film Festival (BIFF), was confirmed to receive the Popular Art award of the 55th Busan Culture Awards on October 10th. Busan city chose 9 award winners of Busan culture awards including KIM. (KoBiz, October 12, 2012)

Actors in Jury Become Jury in Reality
The 10th Asiana International Short Film Festival (AISFF), starting on November 1st, announced the jury of the competition section. What is notable is that Ahn Sung-ki, Kang Soo-yeon, Jung In-gi, Tony Rayns (film critic) and Tomiyama Katsue (president of Image Forum, Japanese artistic film’s exclusive screen), who act as jury members in Jury, the opening film of this year’s AISFF, meeting its 10th anniversary, have been appointed as jury of the competition section in reality. Jean Paul Sallet and Luca Celada, members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), had a meeting with Kim Ho-il, the chairman and Park Do-sin, head of program department of the Korean Film Reporters Association (KOFRA) during their visit to the Busan International Film Festival (BIFF). “We will Communicate with Audiences”
The organizing committee of the Gwangju International Film Festival, which will start on Novermber 8th, announced that Jeong Dong-chae, a previous minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, has been appointed as the festival director. Jeong Dong-chae became a member of the National Assembly after working for Hapdong News Agency and has continuously served as a standing committee member. (KoBiz, October 10, 2012)
