Kim Ki-duk's Pieta Takes the Golden Lion at Venice Film Festival
It has been extensively reported at this point but it's wonderful to hear that Kim Ki-duk's Pieta took the Golden Lion at this year's Venice Film Festival. This marks the first time a Korean film has scooped up top honors at one of the major three European fests (Berlin, Cannes, Venice)! It is also a major comeback for Kim Ki-duk and proof of his popularity overseas. Also encouraging is the film's strong performance in Korea, which was bolstered by the international accolade, jumping four spots in the rankings in a single day. Korean film The Weight, from director Jeon Kyu-hwan, has picked up the Queer Lion Prize at the Venice International Film Festival. The award is in its sixth year and celebrates film that represent lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender characters. The 17th Busan International Film Festival, which will unfold over October 4-13, has announced its full selection and boy is it packed to the gills. Many new films from stars of world cinema will be screened and a number of high-profile Asian films will bow at the event. The 48-Hour Film Project – Seoul (48HFP Seoul) is being staged again this year, and as the Oct. 9 deadline for registration approaches, there are only a few spaces left for teams to register. Kim Ki-duk, the winner of the Golden Lion award at the 69th Venice International Film Festival, is a self-made man who started as a non-mainstream outsider but clinched top honors as a movie director. Having never studied film at school, the eccentric director built his own movie world turning his own life philosophy into visual poetry based on inborn artistic talent. He was born in Bonghwa, North Gyeongsang Province, in 1960 and grew up in an economically difficult environment. (The Korea Herald, September 9, 2012)

Kim Ki-duk's Pieta Secures Venice Sales
Even before its big win last Saturday, Kim Ki-duk's Venice title Pieta had secured a number of sales for its distributor Finecut Korean sales company Finecut including Maywin Films for ex-USSR including Baltic States, AS Fidalgo for Norway, Bir Film for Turkey, Ama Films for Greece and Edko Films for Hong Kong.
