11th New York Asian Film Festival on MKC

Sadly I can't make it to this year's New York Asian Film Festival since, as you know, I'm halfway around the world but that doesn't mean that MKC won't be covering it! Peter Gutierrez, our US Correspondent will be chiming in with a few pieces on Korean films while I have a few features and reviews up my sleeve as well!

It's a great year for Korean film at the festival with no less than 12 films and a program of shorts being screened. The most exciting element of the package will be the presence of screen legend Choi Min-sik who will supporting his most recent work Nameless Gangster but will also be the subject of a retrospective, with Failan (2001), Oldboy (2003) and Crying Fist (2005) also playing during the week.

Other new releases include All About My Wife, which is about to become the most successful Korean film of the year, and the Kim Jee-woon and Lim Sung-pil directed sci-fi omnibus Doomsday Book. A few big indies are screening including last year's Best Asian Genre Film from PiFan Bloody Fight in Iron-Rock Valley, the animated festival hit King of Pigs and the Busan-screened Red Vacance Black Wedding. Rounding off the selection are a few recent Korean films including last year's mega period action hit War of the Arrows, the romcom Couples (2011) and the dark melodrama Secret Love (2010).

Aside from the Korean contingent there is of course a great selection of films and I will be reviewing a few choice picks that I caught at earlier fests this year. There's a great big preview on the fest that will be posted shortly over on Twitch (which I contributed to) so be sure to check it out for a thorough look at the week.

To those who can make it, this year's NYAFF is not the be missed!
